What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is usually caused by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. These incidents vary massively, but may include having, or being involved in an accident, act of violence, or natural disaster, or losing a loved one.

PTSD is diagnosed when the effects of these incidents interfere with your daily life. The after-effects can affect you in the form of flashbacks, nightmares, feeling numb, or feeling hyper-vigilant.

PTSD is not a sign of weakness; it’s just the brain’s way of reacting to the stress it has experienced. With support, you can find ways to process these incidents and move towards a calmer and safer state of mind. Hypnotherapy for trauma is one way to get help for PTSD.

How Does Hypnotherapy for PTSD Work?

The process of using clinical hypnosis to treat various mental health conditions is known as hypnotherapy. There are two important parts of the brain: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious or the logical part of the brain controls how we think and act, and is in charge of our decisions. Our subconscious mind, however, works on controlling our responses to trauma and influencing our behaviour.

Hypnotherapy for PTSD focuses on the subconscious mind, where we use suggestions to encourage positive change. This state is much more receptive to change, but you’ll be in complete control at all times, and will return to your normal self once the session is over.

Types of PTSD

According to the DSM-5, PTSD can be classified into the following categories based on how soon symptoms appear and the nature of their effects.

PTSD with Dissociative Symptoms

If you feel detached from yourself or as if your surroundings are unreal, you may have PTSD with Dissociative Symptoms. These effects are also known as depersonalisation and derealisation and can make it difficult to process trauma.

PTSD with Delayed Expression

If you’ve experienced severe trauma but didn’t notice any immediate effects, you might begin to notice PTSD-like symptoms later on, once the trauma has become a distant memory. This is known as PTSD with Delayed Expression. These symptoms can be triggered by sudden life changes or increased stress.

Acute PTSD

This type of PTSD doesn’t have a separate descriptor under DSM-5. However, this helps clinicians understand the timeframe of your distress. When you have had PTSD symptoms for less than 3 months, it can be classified as Acute PTSD.

Chronic PTSD

You may be experiencing chronic PTSD if you’ve been experiencing symptoms like intrusive thought patterns, displaying avoidant behaviour, and emotional fatigue for more than three months after the traumatic event.
