Types of Phobias

Phobias are classified into two types, specific phobias and complex phobias.

Specific Phobias

This phobia involves a fear of a specific object or a situation, like being afraid of spiders or confined spaces. Specific phobias often stem from childhood or adolescence. 

The common specific phobias include animal-based phobias (fear of insects, snakes, dogs, or rodents), nature-based phobias (fear of heights, water, storms and germs), body-based phobias (fear of blood, vomit, injections, choking, medical procedures or childbirth), situation-based phobias (fear of flying, confined spaces, escalators or tunnels), sexual phobias (fear of nudity or engaging in sexual acts), and other phobias (fear of certain foods, objects, or costumed characters)

Specific phobias are not limited to this list and are many more than those mentioned.

Complex Phobias

Complex phobias tend to develop in adulthood and can be more disruptive than specific phobias. The most common complex phobias are social phobia and agoraphobia.
