What is OCD?

Associating OCD with just trying to keep things clean and double-checking locked doors is an oversimplification of this mental health condition. In reality OCD is a distressing and disruptive condition that can interfere with everyday life.

If you have OCD, you’ll experience frequent and obsessive thoughts that compel you to perform repetitive behaviour or throw you into a cycle of negative thoughts. It affects about 1 in 50 people in the UK, including males, females, and children.

It can be difficult living with OCD, but with alternative treatments for OCD, like hypnotherapy, you can now better manage your symptoms.

How Hypnotherapy Works for OCD in London?

As an alternative treatment, hypnotherapy can work alongside other treatments to help you understand and address the thought patterns that are at the root of the compulsions. Together, we’ll work to break the cycle of anxiety and repetitive behaviours by reframing your subconscious mind.

Over a series of sessions, many clients notice their intrusive thoughts lose intensity, and the compulsions become easier to resist. Depending on your openness and receptiveness to our sessions, results can sometimes be felt after just one session.

Types of OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)

According to the OCD guide in Very Well Mind, there are five main types of OCD:

Contamination OCD

This involves intense anxiety about germs, dirt, or illness. People often cope by washing their hands or cleaning repeatedly, sometimes for hours, to feel safe. Every day tasks like touching door handles or preparing food could become overwhelming and exhausting.

Harm Obsessions with Checking Compulsions

Harm OCD centres on fears of causing harm to yourself or others, even if you have no intention to do so. It often leads to repeated checking or reassurance-seeking behaviors. For example, you might check repeatedly that doors are locked or appliances are off, to ease the anxiety of something bad happening.

Obsessions Without Compulsions

With this type of OCD, the intrusive thoughts don’t always lead to visible compulsions but cause intense internal distress. They might involve taboo or aggressive thoughts, and the compulsions are often mental, like praying, counting, or avoiding situations that could trigger those thoughts.

Symmetry Obsessions with Ordering Compulsions

The people who are a part of this subtype are marked by their need to have things ‘just right’. People may rearrange objects, count repeatedly, or follow precise patterns to feel a sense of control or prevent imagined harm. It’s not about just neatness, it’s about easing intense discomfort or fear.

Hoarding

Hoarding is now recognised as its own diagnosis, but can appear alongside OCD. It involves difficulty discarding items, even if they seem useless to others. The fear of losing something important or the emotional attachments to belongings lead to significant clutter that can impact daily life.
